The snails live in water and this is considered by the Mexicas as the dwelling of the Sacred Fire, symbols of the pure Spirit. Because of its shape of spirals, the snail was representative of the evolving and regressing processes of Nature.
If there is evolution in the living species, there is also the regression, for instance in the grain that dies for the stem to be born, in the plant that grows up, that have leaves and finally fruits. There is regression in the plant that withers and dies and finally it turns into a bunch of logs. There is evolution in the creature that gestates inside the mother’s womb, in the child that plays, in the young man. There is regression in the old man that decreases and that finally dies. The worlds evolve when they emerge from the Chaos to Life, then they regress when at the end they become new moons.
